I am writing about the actor Johnny Depp playing Willy Wonka in 2005 Charlie and the chocolate facotry directed by Tim Burton.
I have chosen to analysis this actor because i think Johnny Depp in a very good actor and he plays his character's role very well in all films he has starred in and Willy Wonka is a perfect example of how Johnny Depp adapts the personality of the character very well.
Willy Wonka is a fun loving person who owns a chocolate factory however the relationship between him and his father makes Willy Wonka upset about the idea having a family so he is alone. He always smiles and has a sense of humour which can be interpreted as being funny or being cruel. The sequence that i have chosen to study is where one of the contest winners Augustus Gloopfalls into the chocolate river and the Oompa Loompa sings about Augustus. i chosen this sequence because you can see Willy Wonka funny side and also how he is cruel using humour.
Costume/Image- Willy Wonka's outfit is very business like with the jacket, black trousers, black shirt, black boots and he wears a top hat which makes him look fancy. He is very paled skinned which shows that he hasn't had contact with the outside world in a long time. He wears an pin/badge which has the initial of his name 'W'. His hair is like a girl haircut, short, just covering his ears, brown hair. He carries a walking stick with him at all times which shows he may need support to walk. He also wears purple clothes which go with his red/burgundy jacket. The clothes make him look smart and expensive. Only Willy Wonka could pull of those clothes because they are unique and unusally which work well with Willy Wonka.
Facial Expressions- In this sequence, he has a variety of facial expressions from happy to upset. When Augustus falls into the chocolate river, Willy's facial expression was between angry and not bothered to show that he was angry with Augustus for falling into the chocolate river but he doesn't want to help him. When Willy hears the machine which transports chocolate to the fudge room, his eyes move first before his head and also he is smirking because he knows what will happen to Augustus. When Augutus gets stuck in the tube, Willy is smiling shows he isnt concerned about Augustus. Throughout the Oompa Loompa's song, he is dancing and smiling along to it shows he is amused by this and he is enjoying Augustus' situation. When one the parents commented that the Oompa Loompa's song sounded rehearsed, he is face went from happy to angry which shows he wasn't happy about the comment and he looked away which showed he was guilty or not bothered. When Charlie calls his name after Willy gave an Oompa Loompa instruction to find Augutus, Willy looked suprised like he was interrupted from a deep thought.
Body Language- Willy Wonka stands with his right leg our forward more than his left, with his right leg bent and food slightly raised at the back and he is leaning on his walking stick which shows he needs support. Also he head is slightly tilted to the right. When he is dancing along to the Oompa Loompa song, he is moving his head up and down and moving his torso left to right. After the Oompa Loompa's song, he applauses at the end and is very enthuastic. When other people are talking, he doesn't seem to move his body or face in the direction of the speaker which shows he isn't interested. When Augustus fell into the chocolate river, he looed away which could incline he was ashamed or upset about his chocolate river being taminated. Sometimes Willy moves his hand to point at something or to emphasis a point he is making. When Mike TV, another one of the contest winners commented that the Oompa Loompas knew something would happen to Augustus, Willy walks away to show either guilty or he isn't interested. When Willy talks to an Oompa Loompa, he needs to bend down, uses walking stick for support because Oompa Loompa are small people.
interaction with others- Willy Wonka doesn't seem to like Mike TV because he criticising him about him and chooses to retalliate by saying Mike mumbles to show he ain't interested and being cruel to Mike. When Mrs Gloop asked Willy where the pipe goes to, Willy responded to her with a joke that the pipe goes to the fudge room, and Mrs Gloop aint happy when Willy says that chocolate flavoured Augustus fudge would take terrible, which shows he doesn't seemed bothered about Augustus.
Interaction with props and set- Willy Wonka carries a walking sitck with him which sometimes he uses to illustrate an action like when he describe to the Oompa Loompa what to do to find Augustus.
Dialogue- Dialogue is a mixture of informal and formal words. Some words he empharises to show importance of the words or to make a single word show feelings like when Willy says 'Eww' to show that Augustus chocolate fudge would taste terrible. Im some lines, he talks faster but you can clearly still hear the words being said. Also he pauses before answering Mrs Gloop to show he needed to think before what he says.
